- The installation process extracts a file called PC3D.MAN. This is a
- ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.
-
- Following the installation, make sure that the PC3D.MAN file is
- indeed on your default directory. Then, to print this manual:
-
- (1) Make sure that the your printer is ON and there is enough
- paper in it (the manual is about 100 pages).
-
- (2) From the DOS prompt, type
-
- COPY PC3D.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
-
- Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
- then you need to use the command COPY PC3D.MAN COM1, or
- COPY PC3D.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your
- printer is connected to).
-
-
-
- NOTES/ADDITIONS TO THE USER'S MANUAL
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- 1. When a new view is selected, an image extents scan is made and the
- image is placed in the center of the screen (similar to performing
- an Image, All command), if the Auto Ctr toggle is ON.
-
- 2. Identifying reference marks are placed in the center of facets. This
- is particularly useful when trying to change the surface normal, since
- it permits you to select uniquely identified facets.
-
- 3. The limit on the number of points that can be accommodated when
- importing a WAV file, was increased to 8000.
-
- 4. VGA 256-color and VESA color mapping is done using a 3,3,2 model,
- i.e., 3 bits are used for Green, 3 for Red and 2 for Blue. Since
- there is not enough resolution (2 bits) for Blue, you might
- experience blue patches when rendering an 'almost' gray scale image.
- If that happens, select the Gray option in the Render sub-menu.
-
- 5. When rendering in 256 colors, the edges are NOT visible regardless of
- the setting selected in the Render, Edges sub-menu.
-
- 6. The trackball employs an effective 'gimbal lock' mechanism. If the
- image is rotated/rolled beyond a 90 degree angle, the Yaw angle
- automatically switches by 180 degrees.
-
- 7. As the observer distance (D) is reduced, and you move closer to the
- center of the image, you will observe some clipping of polygons that
- are effectively behind the focal length plane. This normally occurs at
- about D=0.5. You might need to render the image to re-orient
- yourself.
-
- 8. When attempting to print without EMS, the 32k-48k shadow buffer is
- used by the Z-buffer model to internally render the image in
- horizontal strips. Since the buffer size is limited, the longer the
- strip (specified print width) the narrower the vertical strip size
- that can be accommodated. When the calculated vertical size falls
- below 16 scan lines, the program will not render and will abort the
- printing process. This limit will accommodate a 7.5 inch width at
- 120 dots per inch resolution. Under these conditions, if you want to
- increase the resolution, you'd have to reduce the specified print
- width. For above example, if you wanted to use 240 dpi resolution,
- the specified width should be approximately 3.75 inches.
-
- 9. When creating TGA output files, the program requires approximately
- 300k of EMS to render the image. If it's not available, the TGA
- output menu is disabled and an appropriate error message will be
- issued.
-
- Modifications in Release 2.00a
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- 1. The {smooth_triangle....} option was implemented for POV output
- files, for all mesh type objects on layers 17-32 (spheres, extrusions,
- etc.) This results in a smoother transition from facet to facet
- using the average sufrace normal of each facet bordering the
- vertex. (No such smoothing takes place on layers 1-16).
-
- 2. The {bounded_by.....} option was implemented in the POV output
- files. This results in a significant decrease in rendering time.
- The {composite...} command is now used to group related objects
- rather the {object...} command. This was necessary in order to
- make the {bounded_by...} command operational.
-
- 3. The observer point coordinates, in the POV output file, are now
- reflective of the user selected observer coordinates.
-
- 4. The observer point coordinates, while viewing an image in ProtoCAD,
- are now reflective of the user selected observer coordinates.
-
- 5. If you are using later versions of the POV program to ray trace
- images created with ProtoCAD, then the +mv1.0 command line
- switch should be used (The command structure in the ProtoCAD created
- files conforms to ver 1.x of POV - see POV documentation for
- additional information).
-
- 6. A correction was made to the File, Config, Printer menu, to ensure
- that the printer driver selected by the user would stay selected
- after the menu was exited.
-
- 7. The on-screen "control cube" speed is now controlled by the SPDUP
- parameter under the File, Config, Default menu. The default value is
- 2 which should be fine for most users. Increasing the value speeds
- up the control cube movement, while decreasing it to 1 or 0 slows it
- down for pin-point viewing accuracy.
-
-
- Modifications in Release 2.00b
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- 1. A modification was made to correct the EMM386 exception error when
- importing a DXF file because of stack overflow. Modules were
- rearranged so now stack space available for each call is doubled.
-
- 2. A modification was made to the DXF Export module, for 3D entities, so
- that the extraneous Type 13 information, required when importing to
- AutoCAD, is now added to the exported file.
-
- 3. A significant modification was made to the memory management modules
- which resulted in the following three modes and appropriate
- enhancements.
-
- a. Screen update speed was increased by up to 100% (in wireframe
- mode) and by up to 20% when rendering. The actual speed depends
- on the specific design, the amount or RAM available, etc. In this
- mode, the program consumes more RAM. It should be noted that if
- you don't have enough Expanded Memory (EMS), the program can take
- up to five six times longer for a screen update, regardless of
- the mode yo are in!! It is recommended that at least 2 Mb of
- EMS is available before you start the program.
-
- b. If speed is not of importance, but memory is premium, then start
- the program with the /MIN command line switch i.e., PC3D /MIN
- [ENTER]. (The /MIN switch was not active in earlier releases, but
- it IS active NOW.) This would make maximum amount of memory
- available to you (MINimize memory usage), at the expense of screen
- update slowdown.
-
- c. In earlier versions, memory consumed by placing data into a buffer
- during edit operations, was NOT returned to the pool, and
- eventually, the user might run out of memory, even though the
- model size (# of elements), did not change significantly.
-
- With the new memory module, the memory used for the edit buffer is
- freed and returned to the pool when the File, GetInfo command is
- executed. However, the option to clear this memory, or not, is
- controlled by the user through the toggle FREEMAN (under the File,
- Config, Default menu). If FREEMAN is toggled ON, then the memory
- is freed every time File, GetInfo is executed.
-
- - End -
